Kayla Kowalski Founder Kayla Kowalski studied Spanish and Education at Meredith College as a NC Teaching Fellow. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2014, she went on to teach middle and high school Spanish. After serving in the traditional classroom, she taught English as a Second Language online for several years. At this time she returned to the public school system as a Kindergarten teacher at a Spanish immersion school. In addition to teaching, Kayla also served in leadership roles supporting new teachers. After leaving the classroom ahead of the birth of her first child, Kayla returned to teaching part-time in the homeschool community. She is drawn to slow and intentional education models that follow the lead of the child and incorporate natural elements and the outdoors whenever possible. She hosts a nature-study cottage school once a week and enjoys leading Book Clubs and Story Circles to engage the community in early literacy for their children. She is so excited to bring her passion for education, for both children and parents, to the Hampstead community!

Kim Houser President Kimberly Houser is a dedicated education professional with over 22 years of experience in elementary education. As a curriculum developer and certified Forest School teacher, she is committed to fostering creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning in children. Kimberly brings her passion for education and community engagement to her role as President of the Board, where she strives to support meaningful programs and sustainable growth. She is married and the proud mother of two children, and in her spare time, enjoys reading, creating art, and spending time outdoors.

Gwen Ennis Secretary Gwen Ennis has been in education for over thirty years. As a teacher of elementary, middle, and high school students, she has focused on engaging students in hands on lessons designed to encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving. She feels that outdoor education is important for students of all ages in order to foster both a love of nature and respect for the environment. Getting students outside promotes physical activity, reduces stress, and builds confidence. She refers to herself as a student of the world traveling both in the US and abroad. She has visited 39 states and 17 countries with aspirations to visit every continent.

Jon Messina Treasurer Jon Messina is a Wilmington native, small-business owner, and father of three who’s passionate about building strong community spaces for kids and families. He owns Memories of a Child, a children’s new and used resale shop built around connection, affordability, and supporting local parents. With years of experience managing both people and projects, Jon brings a blend of leadership, problem-solving, and genuine heart for helping others. He’s excited to support the homeschool community and contribute to creating opportunities where kids can learn, grow, and feel empowered.
